Acupuncture

During an acupuncture treatment, thin needles are inserted into various points on the body.   Some of the points are on traditional acupuncture “channels,” while others are in muscles or tender points on the body.  Patients often experience pain relief after even the first treatment, but it often takes several treatments to achieve more long-lasting results.

How does acupuncture help?

According to the American Pain Society and the American College of Physicians, acupuncture is a viable option to treat low-back pain, especially for patients who do not find relief with more conventional types of treatment.

Studies have shown that acupuncture can trigger the release of neurotransmitters that, in turn, reduce pain.  Acupuncture can also help reduce trigger points in muscles and activate muscles that might not be functioning optimally.  In addition, acupuncture can help promote the transition from the “fight or flight” sympathetic nervous system response to the “rest, digest and repair” parasympathetic response where the body can more effectively heal itself.

Multiple acupuncture treatments are usually necessary, especially for patients who have had chronic pain.  Many studies have found sustained long-term pain reduction after several treatments.

Risks and Side Effects of Acupuncture

Acupuncture has minimal risks and side effects when performed by a trained, licensed acupuncturist. Bruising or irritation at the site of insertion is possible but is usually minimal if it does occur. Needling into muscles can sometimes cause some soreness, akin to a deep massage.  The acupuncturist will review all possible risks with the patient and answer any questions the patient has.
