Cupping FAQs

What is cupping?

Cupping is a type of therapy that uses of cups to create a vacuum on your skin. The vacuum increases space between fascial and muscle layers so new blood with fresh oxygen and nutrients can circulate freely to promote healing. Cupping “marks” or discoloration may occur and can last from a few days to a week before fading.  The area that was cupped may also be sore for 12-24 hours after a treatment in the same way that a deep massage can cause short-term muscle soreness.

How does cupping work?

Injuries, repetitive motion, exercise, and poor posture can cause muscle tension, soreness, and inflammation. Muscle tension and inflammation can restrict blood flow adding to pain and discomfort. Cupping gently lifts the skin and connective tissues to reduce muscle tension and allow new oxygen-filled blood to circulate through the area to help you heal.

Is cupping painful?

The practitioner controls the amount of suction the cup creates on the body.  The greater the amount of suction, the more intense the experience.  Cupping can be compared to deep tissue massage which may at times feel uncomfortable.  Patients often report tremendous pain relief after intense cupping sessions.  It is important to communicate with the practitioner so he or she can reduce the amount of suction if the cupping is too uncomfortable

Where is cupping done?

Cupping is often done on the shoulders, back, and the back of the neck. It can, however, be performed elsewhere, such as on the quads, hamstrings, calves or arms to relieve muscle tension and pain in these areas.

What health conditions can benefit from cupping?

Cupping has been used to help treat health conditions including arthritis, fibromyalgia, muscle strains, muscle tension, asthma, migraines, and various types of skin conditions. Cupping can help stimulate blood circulation, relax tense muscles, relieve pain, reduce stress and anxiety, and increase flexibility and range of motion.
